IS claims responsibility for Kabul mosque attack

Cairo, Oct 4 (EFE).- The Afghan branch of the Islamic State terror organization on Monday claimed responsibility for an attack in Kabul targeting Taliban members that left at least two people dead.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt near the entrance to a mosque, the IS-linked Amaq news agency reported, adding that the attacker had “managed to reach a large group of leaders and elements of the Taliban militia as they were leaving one of the militia’s places of mourning.”

Sunday’s attack caused dozens of casualties, according to that same source.

The bombing, which the Taliban’s interior ministry said killed at least two people, targeted a prayer ceremony that was being held for the death of the Taliban spokesperson’s mother.

IS has carried out other attacks over the past few days “in various regions of Afghanistan, causing severe losses in the ranks of the (Taliban) militia,” Amaq added.

Afghanistan has continued to be racked by violence since the Taliban swept back into power on Aug. 15.

At least five people, including a child, were killed and two were wounded in an attack on Saturday near a market in the eastern province of Nangarhar, an IS stronghold in the Asian country. EFE
