Crystal Palace’s Van Aanholt subjected to racist abuse after Man United draw

London, Mar 4 (efe-epa).- Crystal Palace defender Patrick Van Aanholt was targeted by racist abuse on social media following his side’s goalless draw against Manchester United in the Premier League Wednesday night.

The Dutch left-back, who missed a last-minute chance in the game, uploaded a screenshot of messages sent to his Instagram account which included a racial slur.

“This is why we kneel,” the player wrote on Twitter, in reference to players taking the knee before kick-off in support of racial justice.

He joins a growing list of Premier League players who have denounced racist abuse online in recent weeks, which includes Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and Arsenal’s Willian, among others.

The Premier League last month sent an open letter to Twitter and Facebook, which also owns Instagram, calling for more action against online racist abuse. EFE-EPA
