Poland come from behind against Wales in Nations League opener

Sports Desk, Jun 1 (EFE).- Poland scored twice in the last 20 minutes to edge Wales 2-1 Wednesday in the opening match of the 2022-2023 UEFA Nations League.

With the victory, the Poles take the early lead in Group 4 of League A, the top tier in the competition, pending the Belgium-Netherlands clash on Friday.

Wales coach Rob Page chose to rest several regular starters, including Gareth Bale, Joe Allen, and Aaron Ramsey, with an eye toward next Sunday’s World Cup playoff against the winner of Wednesday’s match in Glasgow between Scotland and Ukraine.

Poland’s star, Robert Lewandowski, was on the pitch for the entirety of the match in Wroclaw, but Wales keeper Danny Ward made a great save to deny the striker what would have been his 76th international goal.

Jonny Williams put the visitors ahead with a fine effort in the 52nd minute and the lead endured until the 72nd, when 19-year-old sub Jakub Kaminski equalized for Poland in just his second international game.

Another sub, Karol Swiderski, got the winner with five minutes left in regulation, scoring from close range after a Lewandowski shot took a deflection off a defender. EFE
