All eyes on Mbappe

Paris, Mar 7 (EFE).- While Paris Saint-Germain become increasingly reliant on their star Kylian Mbappe, the team’s fans keep an anxious eye out for any news on his future at the French club, which appears to be hanging by a thread.

The 23-year-old has yet to commit to extending his current contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season.

His upcoming games could well be his last in a PSG shirt. Next on the calendar is a date with Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League last-16, in which the Spanish powerhouse will look to overturn a 1-0 defeat, this time at home.

Not only are Real Madrid capable of depriving PSG a chance to lay claim to the Champions League title but the LaLiga leaders could yet wrest away the French star, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu.

PSG’s Mbappe dependency became more obvious as the team were handed a 1-0 defeat by Nice, for which Mbappe was suspended.

Although the defeat itself has no great repercussions for PSG’s Ligue 1 hopes as they lead second-placed Nice by 13 points, it raises fears over the team’s future without Mbappe.

Despite having Lionel Messi and Neymar, PSG were unable to pose a real in front of goal, to the extent that Nice’s coach, Christophe Galtier said: “PSG with Mbappe are nothing like with PSG without Mbappe.”

It was also the French player who gave PSG a last-minute advantage over Real Madrid in Paris, his fifth Champions League goal of the season.

Mbappe’s solid performance and unquestionable professionalism give fans a glimmer of hope that his PSG spell will continue for a while longer.

Furthermore, after tying with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to become PSG’s second all-time top scorer a week ago, he said he would like to leave an indelible mark on PSG by surpassing the club’s record holder, Edinson Cavani.

Mbappe’s remarks were interpreted by fans as a positive sign about the possibility of his renewal. EFE
