Cuba withdraws press credentials from Efe journalists

Madrid, Nov 13 (EFE).- Cuban authorities on Saturday revoked the press credentials of the Agencia Efe team in Havana two days ahead of a planned protest that the government has declared illegal.

The team – three reporters, a photographer and a videographer – received an urgent summons to the International Press Center, where they were informed that they were to cease work immediately.

Officials did not offer a reason for the decision or clarify whether the measure was temporary or permanent.

The move came six weeks after the Press Center withdrew accreditation from the Efe bureau chief in Havana.

Cuba is set to open to international visitors on Sunday after months of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while the following day could see incidents if opposition activists go forward with their plan for a national mobilization.

This is the first time that Cuba has revoked the credentials of Efe, Spain’s international news agency, and there is no record of such a step ever being taken with regard to any international agency with a presence on the island. EFE
