Heavy snowfall in central Japan paralyzes transport

Tokyo, Feb 5 (EFE).- Heavy snowfalls caused cancellations of domestic flights and alterations to rail and road transport since Monday in Tokyo and other areas of central Japan, according to authorities.

The low pressure front evolving eastward along Japan’s eastern coast is causing precipitation in the form of snow of between 40 and 55 centimeters in the Gunma and Nagano prefectures. It was causing considerable snowfall in the Tokyo metropolitan area, where snow is less common.

It is expected that between 8 centimeters and 15 centimeters of snow will fall in the 23 districts that make up the Japanese capital Monday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which also said the snowfall would continue until Tuesday.

This situation has caused the cancellation of 68 domestic flights to or from the capital’s two airports, Haneda and Narita, according to Japanese airlines Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.

Likewise, the operators of several of the main highways that cross the center of the country have decided to close large sections of these roads in order to prevent vehicle traffic from slowing down and vehicles becoming trapped in the snow.

Rail companies are also warning of widespread cancellations and suspensions of services in areas most affected by snowfall. EFE
