Cubanismo Brings Its Tropical Rhythm to Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Viniendo desde La Habana, el grupo Cubanismo hará que el público de Memphis se ponga a bailar de principio a fin durante su concierto en el Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC, por sus siglas en inglés) este sábado, 17 de febrero, a las 8 PM. Será una noche con mucho sabor latino y tropical, con ritmos musicales como el mambo, la salsa, el chachachá, la rumba y el jazz latino, entre otros.

Con la dirección de Jesús Alemañy -trompetista del legendario grupo Sierra Maestra desde que tenía 15 años de edad-, Cubanismo comenzó como un proyecto de grabación en 1996, al lanzar oficialmente un disco resultante de varias sesiones con otros músicos destacados de Cuba, como el pianista Hilario Durán, Orlando “Maraca” Valle, Miguel “Angá” Díaz, Carlos Álvarez, Arístides Soto “Tata Güines”, Carlos del Puerto, Luis Alemañy y Luis Alemañy, Jr. (tío y primo, respectivamente, de Jesús Alemañy), entre otros.

Dicho disco, que fue producido como un homenaje a la música cubana, se convirtió en un éxito total, por lo que Jesús Alemañy y el resto de los músicos convinieron en seguir trabajando juntos bajo el nombre de “Cubanismo”. Se vendieron más de 250 mil copias del disco, lo que significaba un récord para la música cubana en ese momento. A partir de entonces, Cubanismo ha logrado posicionarse como uno de los mejores grupos musicales de Cuba, grabando siete discos más y realizando giras por más de 50 países. En el 2008, fueron nominados a los Premios Grammy en la categoría de “Mejor álbum latino tropical”, por su álbum ‘Greetings from Havana’ (Aim Records).

En sí, Cubanismo surge de los deseos de su creador, Jesús Alemañy, con la visión de actualizar los ritmos de las bandas cubanas tradicionales de los años 50, dominadas por el sonido de los instrumentos de viento. Cubanismo es la culminación de la música cubana tradicional con un estilo diferente, donde conviven el mambo, el chachachá, el bolero y el danzón con sonoridades actuales pero sin perder su esencia. Para Alemañy, es una combinación perfecta entre lo instrumental y lo bailable.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Coming from Havana, the group Cubanismo will make Memphians dance from beginning to end during their concert at the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC) on Saturday, February 17, at 8 PM. It will be a night full of Latin and tropical flavor, with musical rhythms such as mambo, salsa, chachachá, rumba, and Latin jazz, among others.

Under the direction of Jesús Alemañy – trumpeter of the legendary Sierra Maestra group since he was 15 years old -, Cubanismo began as a recording project in 1996, after officially launching an album resulting from several sessions with other outstanding musicians from Cuba, such as pianist Hilario Durán, Orlando “Maraca” Valle, Miguel “Angá” Díaz, Carlos Álvarez, Arístides Soto “Tata Güines,” Carlos del Puerto, Luis Alemañy and Luis Alemañy, Jr. (uncle and cousin, respectively, of Jesús Alemañy), among others.

This album, which was produced as a tribute to Cuban music, became a total success. Such achievement led Jesús Alemañy and the rest of the musicians to continue working together under the name of “Cubanismo.” More than 250 thousand copies of the album were sold – a record for Cuban music back then. Ever since, Cubanismo has managed to position itself as one of the best musical groups in Cuba, recording seven more albums and touring more than 50 countries. In 2008, they were nominated for the Grammy Awards in the category of “Best Tropical Latin Album,” for their album “Greetings from Havana” (Aim Records).

In general terms, Cubanismo arises from the wishes of its creator, Jesús Alemañy, with the vision of updating the rhythms of the traditional Cuban bands of the 50s, dominated by the sound of wind instruments. Cubanismo is the culmination of traditional Cuban music with a different style, where the mambo, the chachachá, the bolero and the danzón coexist with current sounds but without losing their essence. For Alemañy, it is a perfect combination between the instrumental and the danceable.
