Czech international Jankto comes out as gay

Prague, Feb 13 (EFE).- Czech Republic international soccer player Jakub Jankto on Monday came out as gay, saying he no longer wanted to “hide himself.”

The 27-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Sparta Prague on loan from Spanish top-flight team Getafe, made his announcement in a social media video.

“Like everybody else I also want to live my life in freedom, without fear, without prejudice, without violence but with love,” Jankto said in the video.

Jankto, who has previously played for Italian teams Udinese, Ascoli and Sampdoria, became one of a small handful of openly gay active footballers and is the highest-profile player to do so.

Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo and Blackpool’s Jake Daniels are among other footballers who have recently come out as gay.

Jankto’s current club Sparta Prague shared his video statement with a message of support.

Getafe also reshared his video with a tweet that read: “Our utmost respect and unconditional support to our footballer Jakub Jankto.”EFE
