UK fails to meet climate change commitments ahead of COP26, report finds

London, Jun 24 (EFE).- The United Kingdom has not yet taken the necessary measures to reach its goals to combat climate change, an independent advisory group for the government said on Thursday.

The Climate Change Committee’s report comes ahead of the UN climate change conference – known as COP26 – in the Scottish city of Glasgow in November.

The government “has been too slow to follow these (promises) with delivery,” the CCC said.

Last year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed to cut at least 68% of greenhouse gases by 2030 and set a new target earlier this year to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035 in order to reach net-zero by 2050.

The CCC stressed the UK needs to decarbonize buildings, transport, industry and agriculture in several areas and recommended using electric vehicles, reducing meat and dairy consumption by 20% by 2030 and 35% by 2050.

It also said the government should create green jobs, launch a public awareness campaign, and as the COP26 leader, urge rich countries to commit to offer a total of $100 billion annually to developing nations to combat the impacts of climate change.

Several environmental organizations have also criticized the government’s lack of action.

Doug Parr of Greenpeace UK said that “time is running out to show true climate leadership,” ahead of the UN summit.

Friends of the Earth underlined that “without a detailed strategy for combating the climate crisis, the government promises to decarbonize the economy are simply more hot air.” EFE
