England advance as group winners on Raheem Sterling’s goal

Sports Desk, Jun 22 (EFE).- England finished top of Group D at Euro 2020 on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic courtesy of a goal by Raheem Sterling.

Both sides came into the match at London’s Wembley Stadium assured of advancing the knockout stage regardless of the outcome, but the Three Lions made it clear from the start that they were going for the victory.

Luke Shaw’s pass found Sterling in scoring position in the second minute, but the Manchester City midfielder’s shot hit the post.

Ten minutes later, Sterling headed a cross from Jack Grealish into the back of the net to put the home side up 1-0.

England captain Harry Kane forced a pair of saves from goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik, while Jordan Pickford denied Tomas Holes on the Czechs’ best opportunity of the first half.

The second period was quiet apart from a goal by substitute Jordan Henderson in the 84th minute that was disallowed for an offside.

Though the Czechs were overtaken by Croatia for second in the group, they still go through to the last 16 as one of the best third-place teams. EFE
