Quintuplets born in South Korea for first time in 34 years

Seoul, Nov 19 (EFE).- A woman gave birth to quintuplets in South Korea, the first in 34 years, the medical team that treated her at a Seoul hospital said Friday.

The 30-year-old woman gave birth late Thursday to four girls and a boy at Seoul National University Hospital, doctors in charge of the process told Yonhap agency.

The newborns were delivered by cesarean section in a procedure that involved more than 30 hospital members.

This is the first quintuplet birth in South Korea since 1987, the year in which the same hospital assisted the last such birth.

As is often the case with multi-birth infants, newborns are smaller and weigh less than babies at that age, although none have health problems, hospital staff said.

The parents, both 30, are army members and married in 2018.

The woman underwent in vitro insemination and originally conceived six babies, but lost one during pregnancy. EFE
