Activists arrested in London for throwing soup on Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

London, Oct 14 (EFE).- Two protesters were arrested in London on Friday for throwing tomato soup over Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery and gluing themselves to the wall, the Metropolitan Police said.

“Specialist officers have now un-glued them and they have been taken into custody to a central London police station,” the police said in a statement.

The protesters were members of the Just Stop Oil anti-fossil fuel campaign group.

Dressed in T-shirts with a sign reading ‘Just Stop Oil’, the two women threw cans of Heinz tomato soup onto the Dutch painter’s iconic art piece.

They then kneeled on the floor and glued their hands to the wall beneath the painting.

According to the police, there was “minor damage” to the frame but the painting was “unharmed”.

Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh’s best-known artworks, painted in Arles, in the south of France, in 1888.

The work depicts fifteen sunflowers standing in a yellow pot on a yellow background. EFE
