Death toll in Egypt building collapse climbs to 10

Cairo, Jun 28 (EFE).- The death toll from the collapse of a 14-story building in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, in northern Egypt, climbed to 10, authorities reported on Wednesday.

Four others were also injured when the building collapsed early on Monday in the district of Al Muntazah. A search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

According to Egypt’s Mena news agency, the latest fatality to be recovered from the debris was a man in his twenties.

Among the four injured, one was a member of the medical team, the agency added.

The Al Muntazah prosecutor’s office has ordered the arrest of the owner of the building and a contractor on charges of involuntary manslaughter and illegal construction, according to Mena.

Residential building collapses are relatively frequent in Egypt, particularly in crowded areas where prices are at a premium and developers cut corners by not adhering to planning permits and regulations. EFE
