Retired police officers clash with police in Ukraine pension row

Kiev, Jul 14 (EFE).- About one thousand retired police officers, members of the military and other former employees of the Interior Ministry clashed with Ukrainian police outside the Parliament building in Kiev on Wednesday during a protest to demand higher pensions.

Protesters shouted “shame” as they broke through a line of law enforcement. Clashes ensued although there were no reports of arrests.

Police managed to push demonstrators back from the building. Having retreated, participants of the rally, who had traveled from all over Ukraine to the capital, blocked the main street leading to the parliament.

Organizers reportedly said they would plan more protests in the coming days if their demands are not met.

According to the legislation in place, former employees of the Interior Ministry — which spans police and military — who started to receive pensions before 2018 currently get half of the money compared to the personnel who retired after that.

President Volodimir Zelenski on July 10 ordered the government to close this gap, bringing a minimum pension for retired military and police officers to 3854 Ukrainian gryvnias (about $141). EFE
