Cuba asks US authorities to investigate Washington embassy attack

Washington, Sept 25 (EFE). – The Cuban ambassador to the United States, Lianys Torres, said on Monday that after the attack at the Cuban embassy in Washington, the US authorities were “immediately” notified and asked to investigate.

“After last night’s terrorist attack against our embassy, we immediately contacted the US authorities, who were granted access to the mission to take samples of the Molotov cocktails,” said the ambassador on X (formerly Twitter).

Her message was accompanied by four photos showing the remains of a Molotov cocktail in one of the building’s windows and another on the ground, as well as three police officers evaluating the scene.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the attack occurred on Sunday afternoon when a person threw two Molotov cocktails at the diplomatic compound.

“Tonight, 9/24, the Cuban Embassy in the United States was the target of a terrorist attack by an individual who threw two Molotov cocktails. There was no damage to personnel. Details are being determined,” wrote Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on social networks.

The Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and the foreign minister had returned to Havana hours earlier after spending a week in New York for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.

“Last night, hatred again launched a terrorist attack against our embassy in Washington in an act of violence and impotence that could have cost precious lives. We condemn it and await the action of the North American authorities,” wrote Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on social media.

On Sunday night, the foreign minister described the attack as “terrorist” and blamed “anti-Cuban groups.”

Rodríguez pointed out that these groups “turn to terrorism when they feel impunity” and reported that the Cuban government has “alerted the US authorities.”

On Monday morning, as EFE was able to verify, the area had returned to normal, and there were no apparent signs of increased security. Still, the Cuban government called the United States to “act.”

As a result of these events, several officials of the Cuban government and the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC, the only legal one) reported online that the United States keeps the island on the list of countries promoting terrorism.

The Cuban embassy in Washington reopened in 2015, when, due to the “thaw” process promoted by former presidents Barack Obama and Raúl Castro, bilateral diplomatic relations, frozen in 1961, two years after the triumph of the revolution on the island, were restored.

The island’s diplomatic mission in Washington had already suffered another attack in April 2020, when an individual fired an assault rifle at its headquarters. EFE
