Dembélé, Barça draw line under uncertainty with new contract

Barcelona, Spain, Jul 14 (EFE).- Ousmane Dembélé has brought an end to his uncertain future at FC Barcelona after the player and club agreed a new contract that will keep him at the Catalan side until 2024.

The French winger had been out of a contract since July 1 amid rumors he could opt to leave. His renewal, announced Thursday by the club, is set to include a 40% pay cut as cash-strapped Barça build their team for the 2022/23 season.

The deal falls in line with the wishes of head coach Xavi Hernández, who has pushed for the player to stay on. The club’s board in January opened the door to Dembélé’s departure after his agent refused the terms of a contract renewal.

Barça signed Dembélé from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for 105 million euros plus 40 million in potential add-ons.

The Frenchman has scored a total of 32 goals in 150 games during his injury-blighted five seasons at Barcelona. EFE
