Denmark hammer Israel 5-0 to close in on World Cup berth

Sports Desk, Sep 7 (EFE).- Five different players scored for Denmark in Tuesday’s 5-0 pounding of Israel as the Scandinavian side improved to 18 points after the sixth round of European qualifiers for World Cup 2022.

The Danes, who have outscored their opponents 22-0, have a commanding lead in Group 11 over Scotland (11 points) and Israel (10).

The squad continue to display the quality and energy that allowed them to rebound from the loss of captain Christian Eriksen in the Euro 2020 opener to get as far as the semifinals.

Even so, the hosts got off to a slower than usual start in front of 34,000-plus at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen and the contest remained scoreless until the 28th minute, when Yussuf Poulsen scored from point-blank range.

Simon Kjaer made it 2-0 in the 31st, heading in a Daniel Wass free kick, and the third came in the 41st minute courtesy of a thunderous strike from Andreas Skov Olsen.

Wass picked up his second assist in the 57th minute, finding Thomas Delaney at the far post with a free kick.

Andreas Cornelius connected in the 91st to make the final 5-0. EFE
