Shelby County Health Dept. Confirms Hepatitis A Cases Linked To Nationwide Outbreak

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — El Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby está confirmando un brote de hepatitis A en el Condado de Shelby.

El Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby dice que esto es parte de un brote en todo el país. Los CDC comenzaron a monitorearlo a principios de 2017. A pesar de los esfuerzos del departamento de salud, el Condado de Shelby está viendo sus primeros casos.

Estos casos en el condado de Shelby aparecieron en las últimas dos semanas. Hasta el momento, el departamento de salud conoce 10 casos reportados de hepatitis A relacionados con el brote. Pero el número de casos en el medio y este de Tennessee es mucho mayor.

Los funcionarios de salud están siguiendo este brote de costa a costa. Desde el primer caso reportado en 2016, los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades reportan más de 15.000 casos de hepatitis A y 140 muertes.

La doctora Alisa Haushalter, directora del Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby, dice que esta cepa del virus que infecta a los estadounidenses está causando más problemas con sus síntomas severos de malestar estomacal, dolores musculares e ictericia.

“Las personas tienen más probabilidades de ser hospitalizadas y una alta probabilidad de muerte”, dijo la Dra. Alisa Haushalter, directora del Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby. “Se propaga muy, muy rápidamente. Por lo tanto, estamos tratando de controlarlo haciendo realmente las investigaciones de contacto para el pequeño número de casos que estamos experimentando”.

Los que corren mayor riesgo: los usuarios de drogas recreativas, la población sin hogar y los hombres que tienen contacto sexual con otros hombres.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — The Shelby County Health Department is now confirming a hepatitis A outbreak in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Health Department says this is part of a nationwide outbreak. The CDC first started monitoring it in early 2017. Despite the health department’s efforts Shelby County is now seeing its first cases.

Cases in Shelby County popped up in the last two weeks. So far, the health department knows of 10 reported cases of hepatitis A linked to the outbreak. But the number of cases in middle and East Tennessee are much higher.

Health officials are tracking this outbreak coast to coast. Since the first reported case in 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 15,000 cases of Hepatitis A and 140 deaths.

Dr. Alisa Haushalter, the director of the Shelby County Health Department says this strain of the virus seen infecting Americans is causing more problems with its severe symptoms of upset stomach, muscle aches, and jaundice.

“Individuals have more likelihood of being hospitalized and a high likelihood of death,” said Dr. Alisa Haushalter, the director of the Shelby County Health Department. “It spreads very, very quickly So we are trying to get a handle by doing really through contact investigations for the small number of cases we are currently experiencing”.

Those most at risk: recreational drug users, the homeless population and men who have sexual contact with other men.
