Diego Milito looking for football talent for Argentina’s Racing

Madrid, Sep 23 (EFE).- Former Argentine forward Diego Milito, author of almost 200 goals in European football while playing for Inter Milan, Real Zaragoza and Genoa, and winner of the 2009-10 Champions League with Inter, is now looking for talent as a sports director for Argentine Racing, he told the ‘Soccerex Connected’ forum on Wednesday.

Milito, who took over as sports director of the ‘Academy’ at the end of 2017, with which he conquered the 2018-19 Argentine Super League and the 2019 Champions Trophy, explained that he decided not to coach, because he felt that his “vocation” was not to lead from the benches.

“In our football the role of sports director is not institutionalized and I felt there was a need, especially in my club, Racing, in which I felt that I could create a network of scouts, something that works well in Europe,” Milito said.

Milito works in Racing with four scouts, who regularly follow the leagues of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Venezuela; and to a lesser extent Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Racing’s sports director admitted that the economic situation in Argentina, especially the weakness of the Argentine peso, forces them to “be creative.”

One example was the signing of Chilean midfielder Marcelo Díaz, signed from Mexican Pumas in August 2018.

“It seemed impossible, but we were able to make it happen, we had a coach who loved him very much (Eduardo Coudet). He is an elite player,” said Milito. EFE
