Explosion near US military base in Syria, no damage done

Beirut, July 11 ??(EFE).- An explosion took place in the vicinity of a United States military base in the province of Deir al-Zour, in eastern Syria in the series of incidents after the American troops bombed Iranian-backed militias two weeks ago.

A Syrian military source, requesting anonymity, told EFE that the explosion occurred at ??the Konico gas field, where a US base is located.

Official Syrian news agency SANA reported that it took place shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the explosion in a statement and specified that no casualties were reported.

The UK-based NGO claimed it was caused by the impact of a rocket that might have been launched by Tehran-backed militias from their positions west of the Euphrates River.

However, the US-led international coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) terror group in Syria and Iraq did not comment on the incident, the fourth since the air strikes by the US on June 28.

That same day, the militias fired rockets at the US military base in the Al-Omar oil field, also in Deir al-Zour and which has been the target of two other attacks since then, one with projectiles and the other with drones.

Among other sources, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, Washington’s ally in its fight against the IS and also present in Al-Omar, confirmed both actions.

The international troops denied one of them and remained silent on the other.

A number of US targets in Iraq have also been targeted since the strikes two weeks ago, which also affected Iraqi territory. EFE
