DISNEY’S THE LION KING: “‘The Lion King’ Is a Magical Musical,” Says Professional Actor and Dancer Sandy Alvarez

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — “The Lion King” roars again on the grand stage of the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to see this Disney musical, I recommend it; it is a totally different and exciting experience, since it touches your soul from beginning to end.

To find out a little more about this production, La Prensa Latina had an exclusive interview with Sandy Alvarez, a professional actor and dancer who has been with “The Lion King” for more than 17 years – from 2001 to 2008 and from 2012 to present.

According to Alvarez, “The Lion King” is a magical musical. “The story that we try to tell every day is a universal story, a human story. Many people say that ‘The Lion King’ is for children, but this play has so many different moments; it is like a tapestry. With all the departments, whether you have the lighting, the music, the choreography, the direction, the costumes, all of it coming together just builds a beautiful tapestry of wonderful art. Separately they are brilliant, but when it comes together, it just creates a really magical, exciting, beautiful musical. In my opinion, not many musicals from beginning to end just weave it together like a beautiful tapestry,” stated the young actor born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York.

Alvarez’s passion for theatre began when he was 14 years old. In 8th grade he did his first play, portraying the character of Ricky Ricardo. Later, in high school, he began to study more about theatre and acting.

He had his beginnings on Broadway in 2001, precisely with “The Lion King.” This was a dream come true for Alvarez, as he had seen the musical for the first time in 1997 and was so fascinated with the story that he wrote ‘I want to be in The Lion King in the school’s yearbook – he was only 17 years old by then.

For this production, Alvarez is a swing performer. He also plays 12 animals, and these costumes can weigh more than 30 pounds each.

“The choreography allows you to be the animal that you are impersonating. But it also lets you show yourself as a human being,” added the Latin actor, who has also stood out on Broadway as a director and choreographer. In fact, Alvarez won two NAACP awards for the choreography of “U Don’t Know Me” and “Black Olive.”

When I asked him what he liked most about this play, Alvarez said it was the music of Africa. “It still touches my soul; I love it!”

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — “El Rey León” vuelve a rugir en el gran escenario del Teatro Orpheum de Memphis. Quienes no hayan tenido la oportunidad de ver este musical de Disney, yo se los recomiendo; es una experiencia totalmente distinta y emocionante, ya que te llega al alma de principio a fin.

Para saber un poco más de esta producción, La Prensa Latina tuvo una entrevista exclusiva con Sandy Álvarez, un actor y bailarín profesional que ha estado con el “El Rey León” por más de 17 años –del 2001 al 2008 y desde el 2012 hasta ahora.

Según Álvarez, “El Rey León” es un musical mágico. “La historia que nosotros tratamos de decir todos los días es una historia universal, una historia humana. Mucha gente dice que ‘El Rey León’ es para niños, pero esta obra tiene tantos momentos diferentes, desde los disfraces, la música, la coreografía, el escenario o las luces; todo es brillante por separado, pero al estar todas las partes unidas, es aún más bello y esplendoroso. Es como un tapiz, que cuando ves los diferentes hilos que tiene por separado y luego aprecias todo en conjunto, encuentras que es algo espectacular. Eso es ‘El Rey León’ para mí, un musical mágico”, expresó el joven actor nacido en Puerto Rico y criado en Nueva York.

La pasión de Álvarez por el teatro comenzó cuando él tenía 14 años de edad. En el 8vo grado hizo su primera obra teatral, caracterizando el personaje de Ricky Ricardo. Luego, en la escuela de bachillerato, empezó a estudiar más sobre el teatro y la actuación.

Tuvo sus inicios en Broadway en el 2001, precisamente con “El Rey León”. Esto fue un sueño hecho realidad para Álvarez, ya que él había visto el musical por primera vez en 1997 y quedó tan fascinado con la historia que escribió “Yo quiero estar en ‘El Rey León’” en el “yearbook” (álbum anual) de su escuela, cuando tan sólo tenía 17 años.

Para esta producción, Álvarez hace el papel de “swing”, es decir, que reemplaza a aquellos actores que están ausentes. También hace el papel de 12 animales, cuyos trajes pueden pesar más de 30 libras.

“La coreografía que te dan te convierte en ese animal que estás personificando. Pero no sólo se representa al animal, sino a uno mismo como ser humano”, agregó el actor latino, quien además se ha destacado en Broadway como director y coreógrafo. De hecho, Álvarez obtuvo dos premios NAACP por la coreografía de los musicales “U Don’t Know Me” y “Black Olive”.

Cuando le pregunté sobre qué era lo que más le gustaba de esta obra de teatro, Álvarez dijo que era la música de África. “Todavía me toca el alma; me encanta”.
