China willing to deepen cooperation with Russia within G20

Beijing, Jul 6 (EFE).- China is willing to deepen cooperation with Russia within multilateral frameworks including the G20, Chinese deputy foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu told the Russian Ambassador to China, Andrey Denisov.

“China hopes to strengthen strategic coordination with Russia and deepen cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS and G20 to promote the development of a global governance system in a fairer and more reasonable direction,” the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

According to the statement, Ma told Denisov during a meeting Tuesday that under the “strategic leadership” of presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, bilateral relations between the two countries had maintained a “high level of performance”.

Denisov said Moscow was willing to work with Beijing to implement the “important consensus” between Xi and Putin and would make “unremitting efforts” for bilateral relations to develop in a “healthy way”.

The comments follow a Nato summit in Madrid last week that positioned Russia as the greatest threat of our times and warned of the global challenges posed by China.

They also come ahead of a G20 summit set to take place in Indonesia this week in which Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi will meet with his United States counterpart, Antony Blinken.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China has maintained an ambiguous position calling for the territorial integrity of all countries to be respected and has avoided using the word “invasion” to refer to the Russian offensive. EFE
