Djokovic comes back from 2 sets down to reach Wimbledon semis
London, Jul 5 (EFE).- Novak Djokovic fought back from two sets down against Jannik Sinner to reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the 11th time in his career after winning 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
The Serbian number one seed had not trailed by two sets at the All England Club in seven years, but managed to turn things around and maintain his unbeaten run at Wimbledon since 2017 intact.
The comeback victory means Djokovic is still on course to secure his 21st Grand Slam title, one less than Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who plays his quarterfinal match on Wednesday.
After a close first set, Sinner dominated the second, with Djokovic a shadow of his usual self, his play littered with errors.
He didn’t generate a single break point, lost his serve twice, won only four points on the return and hit just five winners during the second frame, as the Italian looked on course for a major upset.
But Djokovic’s greatness, which was never truly in doubt, came to the fore as he turned the match on its head.
The momentum was all with the Serb, and his young opponent, who was making his first-ever appearance in a Wimbledon quarter-final, could not cope with the pressure.
After that slow start, Djokovic was finally locked in and the mistakes disappeared. He made only three errors in the third set, eight in the fourth and three in the fifth, subduing the 20-year-old with a 17-6 run of games.
The comeback, sealed in three hours and 35 minutes, was neither epic nor legendary. In fact, once he had clinched the break in the third set, it almost felt routine and expected.
Djokovic will face either Goffin or Norrie in the semifinal on Thursday. EFE
