Hungary slams plans for rainbow projection at venue of game vs. Germany

Budapest, Jun 21 (EFE).- The Hungarian government on Monday criticized Munich city council’s plans to illuminate the Allianz Arena stadium in rainbow colors in support for the central European country’s LGBTQI+ community during Germany’s home Euro 2020 game against Hungary.

“The intention to mix up politics with sport is clearly detected, because everybody knows what it is all about,” Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó told journalists on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.

This is “very harmful and dangerous,” he added about the proposal, which is pending UEFA approval.

The Munich city council explicitly stressed that the decision aimed to show solidarity with Hungary’s increasingly marginalized LGBTQI+ community.

Last week, the ultra-nationalist Hungarian government, which has an absolute majority in Parliament, passed controversial regulation that prohibits, among other things, talking about homosexuality in school. The move is considered homophobic by the opposition and international NGOs. EFE
