Djokovic fights back, Swiatek cruises into US Open 4th round

New York City, Sep 2 (EFE).- Novak Djokovic made a miraculous comeback to beat fellow Serb, Laslo Djere, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in the third round of the US Open while reigning champion and world no. 1, Iga Swiatek, crushed Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 to move into the fourth round.

The world no. 2 fought back from two sets down to qualify for the fourth round in a match that lasted three hours and 45 minutes.

It was Djokovic’s eight career win after dropping the opening two sets in a match.

The Serb will meet 105th-ranked Borna Gojo of Croatia in the Round of 16 on Sunday.

In the women’s singles, Swiatek thrashed Slovakian qualifier Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 in just 49 minutes to reach the fourth round without dropping a set in the tournament.

She will face 21st-ranked Jelena Ostapenko in the next round of the year’s last Grand Slam tournament.

Former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who has returned to tennis after retiring in 2020, also beat American Jennifer Brady 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in one hour 58 minutes on Friday.

The 2018 Australian Open winner and a US Open finalist in 2009 and 2014 will face one of Flushing Meadows’ favorites in the next round: 19-year-old American Coco Gauff. EFE
