Tottenham announce Conte as new manager

London, Nov 2 (EFE).- Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Antonio Conte as their new manager, the club said in a statement Tuesday.

The Italian replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked on Monday after just 17 games in charge.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach has signed a contract until 2023, with an option to extend.

“I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again,” Conte said.

Tottenham had tried to sign Conte last season after Jose Mourinho was sacked, and after also failing to attract other coaches like Paulo Fonseca, the club turned to Nuno.

Conte said: “Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

“But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.”

“We are delighted to welcome Antonio to the Club. His track record speaks for itself, with vast experience and trophies in both Italy and England,” Managing Director, Fabio Paratici, said.

During his time at Chelsea, the former manager of the Italian national team won the Premier League in 2017 and the FA Cup in 2018 before being sacked at the end of that season.

Conte’s first match in charge of Spurs comes against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League on Thursday before Tottenham travel to Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. EFE
