Russia hits highest daily number of coronavirus cases since January 2

Moscow, Jul 4 (EFE).- Russia recorded 25,142 new Covid-19 infections over the past 24 hours, hitting its highest daily number of cases since January 2, the country’s health ministry said on Sunday.

A total of 663 coronavirus-related deaths were registered, taking the total figure to 137,925 fatalities since the pandemic broke out.

Health authorities said the highly contagious Delta variant, which was first identified in India, accounts for 90% of the new cases.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the epicenters of Russia’s outbreak, where 111 and 104 deaths were recorded respectively.

Despite the worsening situation, the Russian authorities have ruled out lockdowns for the time being.

Moscow and other Russian cities have ordered the mandatory vaccination of service workers in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus.

Since the pandemic began, Russia has registered 5,610,941 cases. It is the fifth most affected country in the world after the United States, India, Brazil, and France. EFE
