Leicester edge Man City 1-0 to win Community Shield

Sports Desk, Aug 7 (EFE).- Former Manchester City man Kelechi Iheanacho converted a penalty with a minute left in regulation Saturday to lead Leicester City 1-0 over his old team and allow the Foxes to claim the Community Shield.

London’s 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium was roughly half-full for the contest between the Premier League champions and the Leicester side that hoisted the FA Cup in May for the first time in the club’s 137-year history.

Man City coach Pep Guardiola was without Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden due to injury and decided that John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Ederson and Gabriel Jesus needed more time to recover after participating in Euro 2020 and the Copa America.

The champions’ new marquee acquisition, Jack Grealish, came on in the 65th minute, but made no significant impact.

Manchester had 59 percent of the ball, yet it was Leicester who created the chances and it took a heroic effort from goalkeeper Zach Steffen to stop Jamie Vardy from putting the Foxes ahead just before half-time.

The game was still scoreless in the 88th minute when Manchester’s Nathan Ake put himself in a situation where had no choice but to foul late sub Iheanacho and the referee awarded a penalty.

The Nigerian stepped to the spot and blasted his shot past Steffen. EFE id/dr
