MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Los padres del grupo Memphis Lift, de las Escuelas del Condado de Shelby, están molestos por la decisión de la junta directiva del distrito escolar de descartar una búsqueda nacional de un nuevo superintendente y nombrar al Dr. Joris Ray en su lugar.

La reunión de la junta escolar estuvo muy concurrida y los comentarios del público mostraron cuán dividida estaba la sala en el tema de una búsqueda del superintendente.
Al final, la junta decidió que los 22 años del Dr. Joris Ray con SCS y sus habilidades para manejar los desafíos fiscales del distrito fueron suficientes para terminar la búsqueda.
“Me siento muy honrado esta noche. Soy de esta comunidad. Fui un estudiante y maestro en esta comunidad y me encantan las Escuelas del Condado de Shelby”, dijo Ray.
Ésta es la segunda vez que este distrito escolar decide renunciar a una búsqueda nacional.
Lo mismo sucedió en el 2013, cuando la junta nombró a Dorsey Hopson, el antecesor de Ray, para el cargo.
La presidenta de la junta escolar, Shante Avant, era una firme partidaria de realizar la búsqueda.
“La unidad en este foro es muy importante para que podamos hacer el trabajo, y si la voluntad del consejo es que el Dr. Ray es la persona ideal para hacer el trabajo, entonces estaré apoyando eso al 100 por ciento. Él debe tener éxito para que nuestros hijos puedan tener éxito”, dijo Avant.
Las negociaciones del contrato se llevarán a cabo en las siguientes semanas.

“They should have did a search. It’s nothing against Dr. Ray, I don’t even know Dr. Ray but guess what, all they had to do was a search and we wouldn’t have been out here chanting,” said Sarah Carpenter, Memphis Lift.
School board meeting was standing room only and public comment showed just how divided the room was on the issue of a superintendent search.
In the end, the board decided Dr. Joris Ray’s 22 years with SCS and his skills to handle the district’s fiscal challenges were enough to put the search on ice.
“I’m just so honored tonight. I’m from this community. I was a student, teacher in this community and I love Shelby County Schools,” said Ray.
This is the second time this school district decided to forgo a national search.
The same thing happened back in 2013 when the board appointed Ray’s predecessor Dorsey Hopson to the seat.
School board chair Shante Avant was a strong supporter of conducting the search.
“Unity on this board is hugely important for us to be able to get the work done, and if our will of our board feels like Dr. Ray is the person to get the work done than I’m going to be 100 percent behind that so he can be successful, so our children can be successful,” said Avant.
Contract negotiations will take place next.
