Iran vows ‘decisive’ response to any attack on its territory, interests

Tehran, Jan 31 (EFE).- Iran on Wednesday warned that it would respond “decisively” to any attack against its territory or its interests, amid tensions escalated by the killing of three US soldiers in Jordan in an attack claimed by pro-Iran militias.

“The Islamic Republic would decisively respond to any attack on the country, its interests and nationals under any pretexts,” Iranian ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Jalil Iravani said, state news agency IRNA reported.

Iravani denied that Iran and the United States had exchanged messages through intermediaries after the drone attack that killed three American soldiers on Sunday in Jordan, near the Syrian border.

“Such messages have not been exchanged,” said the diplomat.

The US blamed Iran for the attack, which also injured 40 people.

“I do hold them responsible in the sense that they’re supplying the weapons to the people who did it,” said US President Joe Biden.

The president said that he had already decided how to respond to the killings of the soldiers without giving more details.

Sunday’s attack was claimed by the powerful pro-Iran militia Kata’ib Hezbollah, the most prominent of the pro-Iran group Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which announced Tuesday that it is suspending its military operations against US positions in the Middle East.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of pro-Iran militias created shortly after the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip, has carried out over 100 attacks against different US positions, both in Iraq and Syria.

Iran has distanced itself from Sunday’s attack, saying that the regional militias that attack US positions do not receive orders from Tehran.

The country has called for a political solution to the crisis in the Middle East caused by the war in Gaza, which has killed more than 26,000 people.

Tehran leads the so-called Axis of Resistance, an informal alliance formed by militant organizations such as Hezbollah, Houthi rebels, the Islamist movement Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and militias in Iraq, among other groups.

Although Tehran admits its links with these groups, it flatly denies that they act under its orders and claims that they make decisions on their own. EFE
