Dutch crime reporter dies after shooting in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, Jul 15 (EFE).- Dutch crime reporter Peter R. De Vries died in hospital Thursday a week after he was shot in an Amsterdam street, family members said.

“Peter fought until the end, but was unable to win the battle. We are immensely proud of him but at the same time with an inconsolable feeling,” family members wrote in a statement published by Dutch media.

The 64-year-old, known for his investigative reporting exposing Dutch criminal groups, died in hospital surrounded by his family after fighting for his life for a week.

De Vries was shot on the evening of July 6 in the center of Amsterdam as he was leaving the TV studio of a crime program on which he was a frequent commentator.

The shooter fired five shots, one of which hit De Vries’ head.

Dutch police have detained two men in relation to the shooting. They are being kept in custody awaiting trial.

The motives behind the shooting are still being investigated.EFE
