Earthquake rocks Bogotá, central Colombia

Bogotá, Aug 17 (EFE).- A magnitude-6.1 earthquake shook Bogota shortly after midday on Thursday, forcing buildings in the Colombian capital to be evacuated.

The tremor at 12:04 pm was followed by a magnitude-5.6 aftershock at 12:17 pm, the Colombian Geological Service said. There have been no reports of major damage.

One death has been reported so far, after a woman fell as she was trying to leave her house in Bogotá, the local police and fire department said.

According to the Colombian Geological Service, the epicenter was located in a small town 120 km east of Bogotá.

The initial earthquake and aftershocks affected several cities in central Colombia.

The National Disaster Risk Management Unit said it was monitoring the affected areas to check for other possible casualties or material damage. EFE
