Kyiv struck by two more explosions as Russia launches massive attack

Lviv, Ukraine, Oct 19 (EFE).- The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit by more explosions on Wednesday, local media reported, as the country came under a “massive” missile attack.

Anti-aircraft defenses shot down “several” Russian missiles, according to sources from the mayor’s office, who urged the population to remain in bomb shelters while air raid sirens were sounding.

The explosions were heard in different parts of the capital, according to the state-run Ukrinform, which added that anti-aircraft defense systems were engaged in other areas of the surrounding region and that an alarm had been sounding for over an hour and a half during the sustained missile attacks.

Russian attacks have also been reported in the west-central region of Vinnytsia, while an Iranian-made kamikaze drone exploded in Chernihiv, north of Kyiv near the Belarussian border.

Russia has targeted the capital with successive Iranian-made drone strikes for the past three days, after shelling Kyiv with its own artillery for much of the previous week.

The targets of these attacks were mainly critical energy infrastructures, as repeatedly denounced by the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The European Union is “rapidly” finalizing new sanctions against Tehran for the use of those drones against civilian targets.

Brussels said Wednesday that there is “sufficient evidence” that Iran has provided Russia with the devices. EFE
