Ecuador to hold general elections on Aug.20

Quito, May 24 (EFE).- The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador on Wednesday officially announced general elections to be held on Aug.20.

The South American nation will elect a president and vice president as well as 137 members of the National Assembly (Parliament), who will hold office until the end of the 2021-2025 term, after which fresh elections will be held.

The CNE announcement came seven days after President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the Assembly, with an opposition majority, before it voted for his removal in a political trial opened against him.

Through a message to the nation broadcast on television, radio and the internet, the CNE confirmed that the vote will take place on Sunday, Aug.20 and, if it required, the runoff for president would be held on Sunday, Oct.15. EFE
