Baby found dead in recycling bin at Mexican prison

Mexico City, Jan 14 (EFE).- The body of a 3-month-old baby was found inside a bag dumped in a recycling bin at a prison in the central Mexican city of Puebla, an NGO that advocates for penal reform said Friday.

The infant was murdered inside San Miguel Prison during a family visit, Reinserta said.

While authorities in Puebla have not commented publically, unnamed police sources told media outlets that detectives were investigating the crime in secret.

An inmate made the gruesome discovery at the start of this week, according to news accounts that described the body as covered in lime.

Documents in the bag containing the body indicate that the killing took place after Jan. 5, the anonymous sources said.

Reinserta condemned the state prison service and Puebla Gov. Miguel Barbosa “for this terrible murder and their absolute incapacity of maintaining control of a prison.”

“The murder of this baby went unnoticed” until the inmate found the remains and reported it, the group said.

San Miguel Prison was the scene last month of a homicide and a brawl among inmates, Reinserta noted.

Killings of minors rose 2.7 percent in Mexico last year to 2,240, equating to an average of six a day, according to data from children’s rights group Redim. EFE
