Edinson Cavani joins Valencia on 2-season deal

Valencia, Spain, Aug 29 (EFE).- LaLiga club Valencia on Monday confirmed a deal to sign veteran striker Edinson Cavani, bringing the Uruguayan international on board until the end of the 2023-2024 season.

In a statement on the club’s website, Valencia recalled that the 35-year-old has “celebrated goals wherever he has played.”

It noted that Cavani was the top goalscorer of Serie A as a member of Napoli in the 2012-2013 season as well as two-time Ligue 1 top goalscorer as a member of Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons.

“He is one of only four players to have racked up over 100 goals in two of the five European big leagues,” the statement said.

Valencia also said the striker has been one of the greatest players to suit up for the Uruguayan national team, “representing them at three World Cups and winning the Copa America.”

The club uploaded a photo to its website of Cavani standing next to Valencia’s president Layhoon Chan.

In a tribute to two municipalities in the Valencia region affected by devastating wildfires, the player and executive held up team jerseys with the names of Bejis and Vall d’Ebo, respectively.

Cavani has something to prove after a poor finish to the 2021-2022 season, in which he scored just two goals in 20 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions.

On Monday night, the Uruguayan watched from the stands in Mestalla Stadium as host Valencia lost to Atletico Madrid 1-0.

Valencia are currently 14th in LaLiga with three points and a record of one win and two defeats. EFE
