More classified documents found at Biden’s home

Washington, Jan 14 (EFE).- Lawyers representing United States President Joe Biden found additional classified documents at his home in Delaware, the White House said Saturday.

A total of six pages bearing classification markings were discovered this week at the Biden residence in Wilmington.

All of those pages, like the documents found in November in Washington office Biden used prior to launching his 2020 presidential campaign, date from his 2009-2017 tenure as vice president in the administration of Barack Obama.

Word of the latest find came two days after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to take charge of the investigation the Department of Justice (DoJ) began in November pursuant to the discovery of classified materials at the Penn-Biden Center think tank.

Biden’s lawyers turned those documents over to the National Archives, which in turn notified DoJ.

The story about the documents at Penn-Biden only became public last week.

This week, Biden’s personal attorneys carried out searches of his homes in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and the White House said Thursday that a single page with a classification marking was found in a storage area adjacent to the garage of the Wilmington residence.

The head of Biden’s outside legal team, Bob Bauer, said that the lawyers who came upon that page “left the document where it was found and suspended their search of the specific space where it was located.”

They subsequently notified the DoJ and took steps to arrange the handover of the material to the DoJ, Bauer said Saturday.

In a separate statement released Saturday, Richard Sauber, who bears the title of special counsel to the president, said that as a government employee with security clearance, he decided to travel to Wilmington to coordinate the delivery of the document.

When DoJ staff arrived, Sauber said, “five additional pages with classification markings were discovered among the material with it, for a total of six pages.”

Sauber, on behalf of the White House, promised full cooperation with special counsel Robert Hur.

“We are confident that a thorough review will show that these documents were inadvertently misplaced, and the president and his lawyers acted promptly upon discovery of this mistake,” Sauber said Thursday.

Months ago, Garland named a special counsel for the case involving classified materials recovered from former President Donald Trump’s residence in Florida during a search by the FBI.

Rejecting comparisons between the cases, Democrats said that DoJ resorted to an aggressive approach toward Trump because the Republican mogul failed to return official documents that he had no right to have removed from the White House.

But the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives demanded the appointment of a special counsel for the Biden case in the interest of fairness.

“It has to be equal,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said hours before Garland’s announcement. EFE pem/dr
