El aclamado musical de “Waitress” estará muy pronto en el Teatro Orpheum

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — “Waitress” se estará presentando en el Teatro Orpheum del 15 al 20 de enero del 2019, por lo que La Prensa Latina tuvo una entrevista exclusiva por teléfono con Christine Dwyer, la actriz principal.
Dwyer es mejor conocida por su papel de Elphaba en “Wicked” (Broadway/Gira Nacional). También actuó como Elphaba en los premios Tony, y para el presidente Obama y la canciller Angela Merkel en el Hannover Messe. Otros créditos de Broadway/Giras, junto con actuaciones en cine y televisión, incluyen: “Finding Neverland” (Sylvia), “Rent” (Maureen), “Sleep No More” y “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” de NBC.
Según Dywer, quien interpreta a Jenna, el musical de “Waitress” es muy similar a la película. “Mantenemos muchas de las líneas del libreto original cuando Jenna habla sobre los diferentes pasteles que está haciendo, por ejemplo, o cuando hace sus monólogos sobre ‘su querido bebé’. Entonces, nuestro musical definitivamente se parece mucho a la película; es una forma no tradicional de contar una historia a través de un musical. Encontrarás muchas similitudes”, dijo la joven artista que lleva alrededor de cuatro meses con esta producción.
Para aquellos que aún no han visto la película dirigida por Adrienne Shelly, y que lleva el mismo título, “Waitress” cuenta la historia de Jenna, una mesera experta en pasteles que trabaja en un restaurante local de un pueblo muy pequeño y que se encuentra atrapada en un matrimonio sin amor, con un marido abusivo. Ella elabora pasteles que reflejan su vida, como el llamado “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” (el pastel de limón que lleva a la felicidad) y el “Betrayed By My Eggs Pie” (traicionada por mi pastel de huevos). Cuando menos se lo espera, un concurso de repostería en un condado cercano y el nuevo médico de la región le ofrecen la oportunidad de comenzar de nuevo y tener una vida mejor; asimismo, sus compañeras de trabajo le brindan sus propias recetas para la felicidad. Sin embargo, Jenna debe reunir la fuerza y el valor para reconstruir su propia vida. Al final, su hija “Lulu” será su gran 
salvación.
Siendo la creación de un innovador equipo femenino, este éxito nominado al Tony Award® está dirigido por la ganadora del Premio Tony, Diane Paulus (“Pippin”, “Finding Neverland”), y presenta música y letras originales de la nominada a los 6 premios Grammy®, Sara Bareilles (“Love Song”, “Brave”), y un guion de la reconocida Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”).
“¡‘WAITRESS’ es un pedacito de cielo!”, dijo Entertainment Weekly, y es un musical “dulce, atrevido y apasionado”, según la New York Magazine. Sin embargo, este musical sólo se recomienda para un público más maduro y no para niños menores de 13 años. “Lo que algunos padres creen que es aceptable y apropiado para sus hijos, puede no serlo para otros”, dijo una portavoz del Teatro Orpheum. “Instamos a los padres o tutores que planeen llevar a sus hijos a leer más sobre la producción antes de comprar sus boletos, de manera que puedan decidir si la obra en cuestión es apropiada o no en función de los valores y estándares personales de la familia”.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — “Waitress” will be premiering at the Orpheum Theatre on January 15-20, 2019, for which La Prensa Latina had an exclusive interview over the phone with Christine Dwyer, the lead actress.
Dwyer is best known for her role as Elphaba in “Wicked” (Broadway/National Tour). She also performed as Elphaba on the Tony Awards, and for President Obama and Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Hannover Messe. Other Broadway/tour credits, along with film and TV appearances, include: “Finding Neverland” (Sylvia), “Rent” (Maureen), “Sleep No More,” and NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.”
According to Dywer, who plays Jenna, “Waitress” is very similar to the movie. “We keep a lot of the lines when she is talking about the different pies that she is making, for example, or when she monologues about ‘dear baby.’ So, yes, our musical definitely feels very much like a film; it’s a very kind of non-traditional way to tell a story through a musical. You’ll find a lot of similarities,” said the young artist who has been with the show for about four months.
For those who still haven’t seen the movie (also with the same title) directed by Adrienne Shelly, “Waitress” tells the story of “Jenna,” an expert pie baker working at a local diner in a small town and stuck in a loveless marriage, with an abusive husband. Pouring her heart into her pies, she crafts desserts that mirror her topsy-turvy life such as “The Key (Lime) to Happiness Pie” and “Betrayed by My Eggs Pie.” When she least expects it, a baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor offer her an opportunity to get a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer her their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life. At the end, her salvation comes in the form of her daughter, “Lulu.”
Brought to life by a groundbreaking, all-female creative team, this Tony Award® nominated hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles (“Love Song,” “Brave”), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (“I Am Sam”) and direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (“Pippin”, “Finding Neverland”).
“‘WAITRESS’ is a little slice of heaven!” says Entertainment Weekly, and is “sweet, sassy and passionate,” according to New York Magazine. However, this musical is only recommended for a more mature audience and not for children under 13. “What some parents believe is acceptable and appropriate for their children, others may find objectionable”, said a spokesperson from the Orpheum Theatre. “We urge parents or guardians who plan on bringing children to research the production prior to ordering their tickets to decide what is appropriate based on personal family values and standards.”
