Spanish canoeist given Olympic bronze 10 years after London 2012

Madrid, Jun 15 (EFE).- Spanish sprint canoeist Sete Benavides was on Wednesday officially awarded his Olympic bronze medal 10 years after competing at the 2012 London Games.

The Spaniard, who originally finished fourth in the C1 200m race, was retroactively given a place on the podium after his rival, Lithuanian Jevgenijus Shuklin, was stripped of his silver medal in 2019 for doping.

“This medal would have come at the beginning of my career, when I only had two or three medals,” Benavides said during a ceremony at the Spanish Olympic Committee headquarters Wednesday.

“It arrived late but at least it arrived, and I’m happy,” he added. EFE
