Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris Signs Refugee Resettlement Consent Letter
MEMPHIS, TN (Oficina del Alcalde del Condado de Shelby/LPL) — El Alcalde del Condado de Shelby, Lee Harris, será el anfitrión del director de World Relief Memphis, una organización de reasentamiento de refugiados, y miembros de la comunidad de refugiados en una ceremonia en donde se afirmará el consentimiento del Condado de Shelby de continuar reasentando a los refugiados. El evento ceremonial de la firma de la Carta de Consentimiento para el Reasentamiento de Refugiados tendrá lugar este viernes, 3 de enero, a las 11:30 a.m. en la oficina del alcalde. En septiembre, la administración de Trump emitió una orden ejecutiva que otorga a las comunidades locales y estatales 90 días para dar su consentimiento en el reasentamiento de refugiados.
Presidente Donald Trump: “Dentro de los 90 días de la fecha de esta orden, el Secretario de Estado y el Secretario de Salud y Servicios Humanos desarrollarán e implementarán un proceso para determinar si el Estado y la localidad aceptan, por escrito, el reasentamiento de refugiados dentro del Estado y la localidad, antes de que los refugiados sean reasentados dentro de ese Estado y localidad bajo el Programa”.
Alcalde Lee Harris: “Creo que tenemos la responsabilidad moral de ayudar cuando y donde podamos. Ayudar a aquellos que han perdido tanto en su viaje a Memphis es lo menos que podemos hacer. MEMPHIS, TN (Shelby County Mayor’s Office) — Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris will host the Director of World Relief Memphis, a refugee resettlement organization, and members of the refugee community for a signing ceremony affirming Shelby County’s consent to continue resettling refugees. The Refugee Resettlement Consent Letter Ceremonial Signing Event will take place this Friday, January 3, at 11:30 a.m. at the Mayor’s Office. In September, the Trump administration issued an executive order giving local and state communities 90 days to consent to resettle refugees.
President Donald Trump: “Within 90 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Health and Human Services shall develop and implement a process to determine whether the State and locality both consent, in writing, to the resettlement of refugees within the State and locality, before refugees are resettled within that State and locality under the Program.”
Mayor Lee Harris: “I believe we have a moral responsibility to help when and where we can. Lending a helping hand to those who have lost so much in their journey to Memphis is the least we can do. We here in Shelby County are fortunate to have organizations like World Relief and all the others who help refugees get back on their feet and establish a new home in our community. We benefit from their dedication to service. We also value the experiences and contributions of resettled refugees in our community who bring with them the kind of determination, entrepreneurship, and new ideas that propel our society forward. I am proud to join Tennessee leaders, including Governor Bill Lee, in signaling to the world that America remains a beacon of hope.”

Mayor Harris submitted the required consent letter to United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo on December 18, 2019.
