WWII bomb defused in Budapest

Budapest, Dec 23 (EFE) – A World War II-era bomb weighing half a ton was defused and neutralized on Friday by military explosives experts after it was detected in a section of the Danube River in the south of Hungary’s capital Budapest, local media reported.

Members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service extracted the device from the river after it was defused.

The bomb, weighing 500 kilograms (roughly 1,100 pounds) and of United States origin is to be shipped to a special army center.

At the end of World War II, the Hungarian capital was heavily bombed by the Allies before being liberated from Nazi occupation after a 51-day siege. EFE
