MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — For the first time, the Orpheum Theatre will be presenting “The Rainbow Fish,” a children’s show based on the award-winning stories by Marcus Pfister and produced by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia and Kids’ Entertainment.

“The Rainbow Fish” is a children’s book drawn and written by the Swiss author Marcus Pfister; it was translated into English by J. Alison James. The book is best known for its morals about the true values of an individual, as well as the meaning of sharing and happiness.

The original story is about a fish, called Rainbow Fish, that has multi-colored scales: blue, green and purple; and among them, he has shiny silver scales of which he feels very proud and fond of. One day, a small fish asks him if he can have one of his silver scales, but Rainbow Fish refuses in a very rude manner. Faced with this selfish behavior, the other fish get upset and decide to stop playing with him. The starfish, the only friend he has left, tells him to go visit the wise octopus to ask for advice. Rainbow Fish listens to him and goes to see the octopus, who in turn tells him to share the beauty of his scales with his friends; only then can he find happiness, even if he is no longer the most beautiful fish in the ocean. When Rainbow Fish meets the small fish for the second time, he gives him one of his precious scales and, seeing the joy of this little fish, he immediately feels much better. Very soon, Rainbow Fish is surrounded by other fish that also ask for one of his precious silver scales. In the end, despite having one silver-colored scale left, Rainbow Fish is completely happy and learns that nothing is more important than love and accepting others for who they are, not for their looks.
