Champions League Round of 16 draw to be redone after mix-up

(Update 1: Re-casts with draw to be repeated due to error)

Sports Desk, Dec 13 (EFE).- The Champions League Round of 16 draw is to be redone on Monday after an administrative error during the initial event caused a mix-up.

During the draw, Manchester United were matched with Villareal, a team they had already played in the group stages. The Spanish side were then instead drawn against Manchester City but the Manchester United ball was not added to the pot to decide Atletico Madrid’s last-16 tie.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United were subsequently earmarked to take on Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain, while Atleti were set to play Bayern Munich.

In a statement, Uefa said: “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

“As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone.”EFE
