Storm in southeastern Spain kills at least one

Murcia, Spain, Sep 26 (EFE).- At least one person has been killed in a storm in the southeastern Spanish city of Murcia, authorities reported Monday.

The man’s body, which is yet to be identified, was found by police officers some 300 meters from his house in the Javalí Viejo neighborhood, emergency services said.

According to the police, a strong force of water entered the victim’s house, flooding the ground floor and washing the house and the man’s body away.

Emergency services were able to evacuate some 15 houses in the area which were at risk of collapsing and flooding due to the heavy rain.

“We went running to the terrace and two seconds later, the wall collapsed, we were two seconds away from dying,” a local resident told Efe, wiping her tears.

“We are left on the streets,” another resident said, pointing at her destroyed house.

The Murcia City Council has asked the central government to declare a catastrophic area in the region. EFE
