Badosa thrashes Ferro in French Open 1st round

Sports Desk, May 24 (EFE).- Paula Badosa on Tuesday sailed into the French Open second round at the expense of Fiona Ferro, while former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova had to sweat more than expected against wildcard Tessah Andrianjafitrimo.

France’s Ferro was no match to the Spaniard, the third seed, and the many unforced errors she committed (20 compared to just six winners) did not help her cause in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat in under an hour.

The Czech Republic’s Pliskova, seeded No. 8, defeated Frenchwoman Andrianjafitrimo 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in just over two hours, to set a second-round clash against another wildcard Leolia Jeanjean.

The 13th-seed Jelena Ostapenko, meanwhile, made light work of Lucia Bronzetti, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in one hour and seven minutes.

The Latvian player will play Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, hoping to extend her run beyond the third round, her best Roland Garros result since claiming the title in 2017.

Ninth-seed Danielle Collins, the 2022 Australian Open finalist, stormed past Victoria Tomova 6-0, 6-4 in just 71 minutes. EFE
