Doha, Nov 24 (EFE).- Switzerland pinched a 1-0 victory against Cameroon in Thursday’s Group G opener with an early second-half goal coming from Cameroon-born Breel Embolo.
Embolo broke the deadlock in minute 48, slotting in a Xherdan Shaqiri cutback to put the Swiss in front.
The 25-year-old Monaco forward declined to celebrate the strike, holding up his hands out of respect for his country of birth.
Cameroon’s defense was called into action on several occasions in the second half but the African team was lackluster in attack.
The defeat at Al-Wakrah’s Al Janoub Stadium makes Cameroon’s escape from Group G all the more complicated, with opponents Serbia and Brazil lying in wait. EFE
