BTS K-pop starts RM, V begin mandatory military service

Seoul, Dec 11 (EFE).- RM and V, two members of the popular South Korean group BTS, began their military service Monday, in an effort to make the entire band simultaneously comply with this mandatory practice in the country.

The two remaining members of the group, Jimin and Jungkook, will enter the service Tuesday.

“I have been really happy as a member of BTS for the last 10 years,” band leader RM wrote Sunday on the social network Weverse.

The artist, 29, and whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, said he felt a little scared, adding that the experience would be inspiring and educational.

V, 27, made a broadcast Sunday on Weverse in which he said he was excited and sure that he would learn things during his service.

As has been customary since members of BTS began their military service, the artists and their agency, Big Hit Music, have asked fans not to visit military bases on the day they are recruited.

Three other members of BTS are already carrying out their mandatory services.

Jin, the first to enlist in December 2022, and J-Hope are performing military service, while Suga is working as a social worker as a substitute benefit apparently for a serious shoulder problem.

Military service is mandatory for all able-bodied males of legal age in South Korea and the shortest service, that of the land army, lasts about 18 months.

Last summer the band said its seven members would be taking a break, at least until 2025, to focus on personal projects and perform military service. EFE
