A continuación:

Taylor Rodríguez: Me llevó muchos años.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — After the final round of the “Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest,” Graceland has now a “Latin Elvis.” I am talking about Taylor Rodriguez, a 21-year-old man who from a very young age felt a great admiration towards Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll.

His performance was so outstanding that not only he impressed the audience, but the judges, producers, and everyone in general. You would have really thought that it was Elvis himself singing and dancing.

To learn more about this new star, who promises to have a great future in his artistic career, La Prensa Latina had an exclusive interview with him. Here it is:

LPL: Tell us about this great experience. How did you feel when you heard your name as the winner?

Taylor Rodríguez: It was a one of a kind experience that I think you can only experience once in your lifetime. The crowd was just electrifying, the competition was great, the competitors were very talented in their own way. It was just an honor to represent Tupelo (MS) and actually win the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest here in Memphis, TN. I was very honored to be picked as the winner!

LPL: How long did it take you to act like Elvis, learn his songs and moves?

Taylor Rodríguez: It took me quite a few years. I started when I was younger but obviously my voice had shifted when I turned older. I can get that lower register of Elvis’ voice, but it was a little difficult in the beginning because I was going through changes and everything, and your voice shifts. I never really had any formal training as far as vocal, coaches or anything like that (until two years ago). I did get a vocal coach for about a year or two just to help me with my register and my range, and that actually helped.

Learning the moves was a whole another separate category in itself. Learning Elvis’ moves is really difficult because you have to actually study him, study every little movement, every little gesture that he does with his fingers, with his eyes or with his facial features, whatever it is, and that is one of the most difficult things, I think, when you are trying to copy exactly what he does.

I started when I was about 9 years old and probably at the age of 15, I would say, I started to really master what it meant to be an Elvis Tribute Artist.

LPL: You won a prize of $20,000 and a contract for a year with Graceland. What are you planning to do this year?

Taylor Rodríguez: I’m trying to come up with a strategic plan to really further my career. By winning $20,000 and winning the backing of Elvis Presley Enterprises, this has helped my career. When you win, you are automatically kind of endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, so that is going to really help my career.

I kind of want to move into a music career and maybe try to tie in Elvis a little bit with my music. I had some records companies coming to me, and they are really interested in myself. I think that is the kind of direction I want to go; if not, somewhere in entertainment. I love to entertain people!

LPL: Coming from a Latin family, as your father is from Mexico, how does it feel to have Latin roots and see that you made it?

Taylor Rodríguez: It really is an amazing feeling because my dad is from Mexico City and came here to start a new life. He became a citizen a few years ago. He has been very successful; he started up a Mexican restaurant business (in Virginia) and now he has several restaurants. So, to kind of be able to achieve my goal is very satisfying, because he has worked really hard, I worked really hard. Just to be able to represent the Latino community as well is really a great feeling.

Rodríguez is also studying to get a college degree online. His major is Business.
