Epic sci-fi movie Dune leads Bafta awards with 11 nominations

London, Feb 3 (EFE).- Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi movie ‘Dune’, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, led on Thursday the British Academy Film Awards, securing 11 nominations.

Following were the Dark Western ‘The Power of the Dog’ and black and white drama ‘Belfast’ with eight and six nominations respectively.

James Bond movie ‘No Time to Die’ got five Bafta nominations as well as the remake of ‘West Side Story’ and coming-of-age tale ‘Licorice Pizza’.

Netflix’s ‘Don’t Look Up!’ comedy disaster movie, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence, is in the running for best film.

Out of six nominees for best director, three are women —Jane Campion, Julia Ducournau and Audrey Diwan— while Will Smith is up for best actor for his role in ‘King Richard’ drama.

In the best actress category are Joanna Scanlan, Tessa Thompson, Renate Reinsve joining Lady Gaga, Alana Haim and Emilia Jones.

Nineteen out of the 24 performance slots this year are first-time nominees and includes Bafta’s first deaf nominee with ‘Coda’ star Troy Kotsu.

The Bafta awards, Britain’s top movie honors, will take place in London’s Royal Albert Hall on March 13. EFE
