Brussels freedom convoy protest fails to paralyze city

Brussels, Feb 14 (EFE).- A demonstration inspired by the Canada ‘freedom convoy’ protests that intended to paralyze Brussels on Monday failed after a shortfall in participants.

The movement opposes coronavirus restrictions and vaccination mandates and follows similar demonstrations that have taken place in Canada, United States, the Netherlands and Paris.

Over 1,000 vehicles on Sunday had gathered in Lille in France, close to the Belgian border, to prepare for their journey to Brussels.

But Belgian authorities banned the protest, arguing the participants did not file the necessary request, and blocked access to vehicles in the city until Tuesday.

A demonstration was however authorized in a parking lot in the outskirts of the city where some 60 vehicles gathered with protestors holding up banners reading “Freedom” and “Stop Covid Pass”.

The protest, which authorities said lacked leadership, was meant to gather vehicles from all over Europe and represent a “European March” against coronavirus rules.

Only a few traffic disturbances were reported. EFE
